چکیده

Although hyperhomocysteinemia is considered to be a key risk factor for atherosclerosis, especially in Western countries, its role in the Asian population is still controversial. In this study, we evaluated the determinants of homocysteine and carotid intima-media thickness, a clinical marker for the detection of atherosclerosis, in Japanese. In 289 Japanese adults (age 37-86 yrs), we screened plasma total homocysteine by high performance liquid chromatography and evaluated maximum carotid intima-media thickness by ultrasound. Other blood chemistry values were also measured. Total homocysteine levels were higher in men than in women and increased with age. In multiple regression analysis, adjusted for age and sex, serum creatinine was a powerful determinant of homocysteine (beta = 3.3, p < 0.01). Maximum carotid intima-media thickness was higher in men than in women and increased with age. When adjusted for age and sex, systolic blood pressure was independently correlated with maximum carotid intima-media thickness (beta = 0.001, p < 0.01). Our current results support previous findings that in addition to age and sex, serum creatinine and systolic blood pressure are independent determinants of homocysteine and carotid intima-media thickness, respectively.

Association between Plasma Homocysteine Concentrations and Carotid Intima-Media Thickness in Patients with Coronary Artery Disease

Introduction: Although homocysteine has atherogenic and prothrombotic properties, the conflicting results from studies made its role in coronary artery disease unclear. Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between plasma levels of homocysteine and carotid atherosclerosis in patients with angiographically confirmed coronary artery disease. Methods: This prospective s...

Carotid artery Intima-Media thickness and cardiovascular risk factors in chronic hemodialysis patients

Introduction: Common carotid artery intima-media thickness (CCA-IMT) correlates with cardiovascular mortality in patients under hemodialysis. In this investigation, we evaluated relationship between CCA-IMT with dependent and independent cardiovascular risk factors in chronic hemodialysis patients. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 51 chronic hemodialysis patients, (31 males and 20 fema...

Carotid plaque burden is associated with higher levels of total homocysteine

There are several problems with the report of Li et al. They studied sex differences, not gender differences. They referred to carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) as atherosclerosis; it is not, and plaque burden is a much stronger predictor of cardiovascular risk than IMT. They referred to levels of homocysteine (Hcy), but almost certainly what they measured was total homocysteine (tHcy), whic...

Comparison of the Intima-media Thickness of Carotid Artery in Children with Diabetes Type One and Control Group Using Ultrasound

Background & Aims: Diabetes is a very important factor for stroke due to blocked blood vessels. It can involve systemic and cerebrovascular arteries at the same time via microangiopathy and macroangiopathy. This project aimed to compare the intima-media thickness of carotid artery in children with diabetes type and the control group. Methods: In this case-control study, 50 children with the age...
